Should I take a job based solely on future progression chances?
My view is that you should never take a job based solely on the promise of some long way off future benefit e.g. great promotion, bonus, travel etc. that may or may not (most likely not happen) I’ve seen this end badly many times. However, it certainly is a good idea to join a company with a solid progression and mentoring structure, who respects their employees though and of course you do need to understand this before committing to the company. You could talk to peers and other colleagues who have worked there or look at their publicly available information and also speak to them directly.
What about going solely for more money?
Again… whilst remuneration is obviously important it needs to be carefully balanced along with the people, values, working environment, hours, work life balance and culture fit you need as well. They all need to align for you for it to be a success. Also be aware of promises of future bonuses as these often don't materialize or are not worth the extra effort expected.
